Stock Market Holidays 2024: Maharashtra Day Celebrations Impact Trading Activity

Amid the celebrations of Maharashtra Day in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, some sections of Indian stock market investors and observers might be confused about whether Dalal Street will remain open on this day. For those individuals, it is advisable to check the official BSE website for the list of stock market holidays 2024.

According to the stock market holidays 2024 list, trading at BSE and NSE will remain closed on 1st May 2024 in observance of Maharashtra Day. This means that there will be no trading activity on Wednesday at BSE and NSE. However, the Indian commodity market will have a different schedule, with the morning session closed and the evening session open. Trading at the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will resume at 5:00 PM in the evening instead of the usual 9:00 AM. Additionally, trade settlements will not take place on this day.

After Maharashtra Day, the next stock market holiday in May 2024 will be on 20th May due to the Lok Sabha elections in Mumbai. A total of 15 stock market holidays have been declared for 2024, with just one falling in May after the 1st.

Looking ahead, the next stock market holiday after the Lok Sabha elections on 20th May will be on 17th June 2024 for Bakri Eid. There will be one holiday each in July, August, and October, with no trading holiday in September 2024. In July, the market will be closed on the 17th for Muharram, while in August, trading will be suspended on 15th for Independence Day. Additionally, trading activities on 2nd October will be halted for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti.

In global markets, equities paused their gains on Tuesday as traders awaited key European inflation and growth data, more corporate earnings, and the start of the latest Federal Reserve policy-setting meeting. This cautious approach triggered a sell-off in the Indian stock market, with frontline indices paring early morning losses. The Nifty 50 index ended the day down 0.17% at 22604.9, with cash market volumes on the NSE rising to Rs.1.25 lakh crore.
