Uber CEO Encourages Customers to Wait for Electric Cars

In a recent interview with the BBC, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized the importance of patience when it comes to waiting for an electric car. He stated that waiting a few extra minutes for an electric vehicle is a small sacrifice that can have a positive impact on the environment.

Uber is rolling out new options to incentivize customers to choose electric rides, as part of their goal to have all car journeys and deliveries done in zero-emissions vehicles by 2040. However, Khosrowshahi acknowledged that the transition to electric vehicles may pose challenges as the company expands its services beyond cab rides and food delivery.

Despite the benefits of electric vehicles for the environment, there are concerns about the import of Chinese-made EVs. Some countries view them as unfair competition for domestic carmakers. Khosrowshahi believes that high-quality Chinese-made EVs are essential in addressing the climate crisis.

In addition to urging customers to opt for electric rides, Khosrowshahi called on the UK government to stick to its pledge of ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. He emphasized the need for government support to make electric vehicles more affordable and accessible, particularly for drivers who cover high mileage, such as Uber drivers.

Uber’s push for electric vehicles aligns with their broader sustainability goals and aims to position the company as a leader in environmentally-friendly transportation options. Despite potential challenges, Khosrowshahi remains optimistic about the long-term benefits of transitioning to electric vehicles and expanding Uber’s delivery services to compete with rivals like Amazon.

Critics have raised concerns about the impact of ride-hailing and delivery services on increasing car journeys, but Khosrowshahi believes that the shift to electric vehicles will ultimately benefit both the planet and Uber’s business.

As the company continues to promote electric rides and explore new delivery services, Khosrowshahi’s vision for a greener future includes collaboration with Chinese carmaker BYD, highlighting the importance of international partnerships in driving sustainable transportation solutions.
