Construction workers in Owatonna, Minnesota made a surprising discovery during a demolition project at a former high school – a time capsule from 1920. The capsule, buried at Owatonna High School, was found as the crew was tearing down the front pillars and doors of the building.

The community gathered for an event to witness the opening of the time capsule, revealing a treasure trove of items from a bygone era. Inside, they found a roster of teachers and administrators, the high school newspaper, local newspapers, and financial statements.

Superintendent Jeff Elstad expressed his excitement at the find, stating, “It’s always exciting to learn more about the history of our community and the people who had the foresight to build a great school that would serve so many students for generations.”

The Owatonna High School Museum Committee is now working with the Steele County Historical Society to preserve the items found in the time capsule. They will decide which items will be displayed at the school and which will be added to the historical society’s collections.

This discovery has allowed the community to reflect on its past and appreciate the historical significance of the time capsule. As Elstad said, “We are committed to continuing to preserve our history for generations to come.”
