Robert Downey Jr., known for his iconic role as Iron Man in the Marvel movies, is set to make his Broadway debut this fall in a new drama titled “McNeal” by Pulitzer-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar.
The play, which explores the life of a gifted novelist with a troubled family and a fascination with artificial intelligence, will be staged at Lincoln Center Theater’s Vivian Beaumont Theater. Directed by Bartlett Sher, the production is set to begin previews on Sept. 5, with the official opening night scheduled for Sept. 30.
Despite his extensive film career, including an Academy Award win earlier this year for his role in “Oppenheimer,” Downey has limited experience on the stage. His only previous Off Broadway credit dates back to 1983. In a statement, the 59-year-old actor expressed his excitement for the new challenge, saying, “It’s been 40 years since I was last on ‘the boards,’ but hopefully I’ll knock the dust off quick.”
Ayad Akhtar, known for his thought-provoking plays that tackle complex themes, has a long-standing relationship with Lincoln Center Theater. His previous works, including the Pulitzer-winning “Disgraced” and “Junk,” have been well-received by audiences and critics alike.
In addition to his work on “McNeal,” Akhtar is also collaborating on a stage adaptation of the film “La La Land.” With two talented artists at the helm, Broadway audiences can expect a compelling and engaging production this fall.
