Residents of Gravesend, Kent, in the U.K. were in for quite a surprise when a peacock named Saataj decided to make their village his home for over six months. The bird was seen hopping from house to house and fence to fence, charming the locals with his colorful feathers and loud squawks.

However, things took a turn when breeding season hit, and Saataj started making loud noises in search of a mate. Concerned residents reached out to Dartford Animal Rescue for help in handling the situation.

Volunteers from the rescue organization, including Ciara O’Hare and her sister Rosie, sprang into action. Using peahen noises to lure the peacock off a roof and into a parking lot, they were able to safely capture him and place him in an Ikea carrier bag for transport.

Now, Saataj is at a center with other peacocks and peahens, where he has the opportunity to find the mate he had been searching for. The rescue operation was a success, and the bird is now in good hands.

Peacocks are ground-feeders that eat insects, plants, and small creatures, according to National Geographic. With Saataj now safe and sound, residents of Gravesend can rest easy knowing that their beloved peacock is in good company.
