Title: Ukrainian Prisoners of War Endure Trauma and Inadequate Rehabilitation

In the aftermath of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the stories of Ukrainian prisoners of war are coming to light, revealing the physical and psychological torture they endured while in captivity. One such marine infantryman, known only by his call sign, Smiley, shared his harrowing experience of nine months of torture at the hands of Russian captors.

Upon his release, Smiley was given only three months of rest and rehabilitation before being ordered back to duty. However, it was during combat training that the extent of his injuries, both physical and psychological, became apparent. Diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, Smiley is still undergoing treatment to cope with the trauma he experienced.

The Ukrainian government’s rehabilitation program, criticized for its inadequacy, has failed to properly address the lasting effects of the traumas suffered by prisoners of war. With thousands of Ukrainian prisoners still in Russian custody, concerns are growing about the lack of proper care for those who have been released.

Reports of torture, rape, and other forms of abuse inflicted on Ukrainian prisoners by Russian captors have raised alarm among international organizations. The Ukrainian prosecutor general stated that about 90 percent of Ukrainian prisoners of war have been subjected to various forms of mistreatment.

Despite the passage of a new law allowing former prisoners of war to choose between returning to service or being discharged, many continue to struggle with the physical and psychological scars of their captivity. The lack of adequate care and support for these individuals has made their reintegration into civilian life a challenging process.

For Smiley and others like him, speaking out about their experiences is not only a means of seeking justice but also a way to shed light on the plight of their fellow prisoners still in captivity. The road to recovery for these survivors is a long and difficult one, but with proper support and understanding, they hope to overcome the trauma they have endured.
