Montez Radio Station Revives Spirit of NYC’s Underground Cultural Scene

Kaitlin Phillips, a publicist and former host of the Montez show “Insider Baseball,” expressed her admiration for the station, saying, “They make me believe people in New York are interesting and have wild interests.” She added, “The internet era can make you forget that people know things you don’t. I’m always like, Where do they find these people?”
One night, during an ambient music show at the station, station manager Mr. Laprade encountered a young musician performing on the sidewalk outside. Intrigued by his unique style, Laprade invited him to perform on air, leading to the discovery of outsider pop musician Mat Kastella.
Inspired by the station’s commitment to showcasing unconventional talent, Laprade and his colleague Ms. Skolnik organized a concert at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, featuring Kastella and a crew of backup dancers. The event captured the essence of New York City’s vibrant and diverse arts scene.
For many, Montez Radio station represents a return to the golden age of community radio in Manhattan. With stations like Know Wave and East Village Radio no longer regularly broadcasting, Montez has filled a void for those seeking a platform to share their creativity and connect with fellow artists.
Donald Miller, a former radio host, reminisced about the heyday of community radio in the late 1970s and early ’80s, describing it as “two tons of fun and great hangs.” The influence of that era continues to inspire today’s downtown residents, with Montez Radio station serving as a modern-day equivalent of iconic venues like the Mudd Club and Danceteria.
