Tragic news has struck the horse racing community as jockey Stefano Cherchi has passed away at the young age of 23, just two weeks after sustaining injuries from a fall during a race in Canberra, Australia.

Cherchi, who had previously ridden in Britain and was an apprentice jockey with Newmarket trainer Marco Botti, fell during a meeting at Canberra when his horse Hasime came down in an incident involving two other horses. While the other riders and horses escaped unharmed, Cherchi suffered a serious head injury and internal bleeding.

The New South Wales Jockeys Association confirmed the heartbreaking news of Cherchi’s passing, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from the racing community worldwide. Cherchi’s girlfriend Brittany, daughter of legendary former jockey Kieren Fallon, had been by his side during his final moments.

Fellow jockeys, trainers, and racing organizations have paid tribute to Cherchi, remembering him as a talented rider with a charming character and a contagious smile. The Professional Jockeys Association described him as immensely popular in the weighing room for his humility, kindness, and sense of humor.
