The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has reported that its offices in Gaza were damaged by shelling, resulting in the tragic deaths of 22 people seeking shelter around its compound. The ICRC stated that heavy-calibre projectiles landed dangerously close to their office and residences, causing significant damage.

The ICRC emphasized that all parties involved have a responsibility to take precautions to prevent harm to civilians and humanitarian facilities. While an Israel Defense Forces spokesman stated that there was no indication of their involvement in the strike, the incident is currently under review.

The ICRC described the aftermath of the attack as a “grave security incident” that led to a mass casualty influx at the nearby Red Cross Field Hospital, with 22 individuals killed and 45 injured. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza reported higher casualty figures and attributed the shelling to Israel.

William Schomburg, head of the ICRC office in Rafah, described the harrowing scene following the attack, highlighting the severe injuries sustained by children, women, and young men. The ICRC has been working tirelessly to provide medical assistance to those affected by the conflict.

In response to escalating hostilities, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned of the potential catastrophe posed by the conflict between Israel and the Lebanese Islamist movement Hezbollah. Guterres urged both sides to de-escalate tensions to prevent further violence and instability in the region.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in a significant loss of life, with thousands of civilians among the casualties. The ICRC continues to provide essential humanitarian aid to those affected by the violence, emphasizing the importance of protecting civilians and upholding international humanitarian law.
