Boxing legend Roberto Duran hospitalized for heart problem
Panamanian boxing legend Roberto Duran, a four-time champion in four different weight classes, is currently receiving medical care for a heart problem, his family confirmed in a statement on Friday.
The 72-year-old former champion is reportedly being treated for a health complication due to an atrioventricular blockade. The family announced his condition and stated that they are awaiting results to provide more information on his health.
Duran, known for his fierce fighting style and impressive career, won titles in the lightweight, welterweight, junior-middleweight, and middleweight divisions. He achieved immediate success in his professional career, winning his first 32 matches and defending his first title 12 times.
In 1980, Duran famously defeated Sugar Ray Leonard to win the welterweight division, but later lost in a rematch where he uttered the infamous words “No mas” late in the eighth round.
After retiring in 2001 following a car accident at the age of 50, Duran finished his career with a record of 103-16. The boxing world is now rallying behind the champion, sending prayers and well wishes for his recovery.
WBC President also issued a statement expressing support for Duran and stating that the world is praying for his successful and prompt recovery.
