The glitz and glamour of a typical singing competition have taken on a new twist in Venezuela, where contestants on the show “M Factor” are vying to become the official campaign jingle for President Nicolás Maduro’s party.

Despite facing international scrutiny for alleged crimes against humanity, Mr. Maduro’s government is using the power of music to soften its image and rally support from the Venezuelan people. The show, which features contestants writing and performing songs in support of the president, has sparked controversy and drawn criticism from those who see it as a distraction from the country’s economic struggles.

Hosted by Winston Vallenilla, a well-known television actor and Maduro supporter, “M Factor” has become a platform for artists to express their loyalty to the president through song. The judges, all known Maduro supporters, offer little criticism of the performances and instead shower praise on the president, whose approval rating remains low.

The show’s producer, Camilla Fabri, insists that “M Factor” was not created at the behest of Mr. Maduro, but rather as a response to the outpouring of jingle proposals received by his campaign. With 35 contestants competing across eight episodes, the final episode will air just weeks before the scheduled presidential election in July.

As contestants belt out their songs, themes of patriotism, loyalty, and denunciations of the United States feature prominently. The show serves as a platform for artists to express their support for Mr. Maduro and his policies, with one contestant even declaring, “With 10 million votes you will have your triumph for sure.”

Despite the controversy surrounding the show, Mr. Vallenilla and the contestants remain steadfast in their support for Mr. Maduro, with one contestant pledging, “If we have to hang up our hats someday and go to the toughest battle, count on us, brother.”

As the competition heats up, “M Factor” continues to be a source of both entertainment and political intrigue in Venezuela, where music and politics collide in a unique and controversial way.
