Columbia imposes deadline for resolution with protesters, warns of potential actions to remove protesters

Columbia University in New York is at a crossroads as administrators and anti-Israel protesters are facing a deadline to reach an agreement to end the encampment on campus. The tension has escalated to the point where a police presence is standing by at the university, ready to intervene if necessary.

University President Minouche Shafik set a deadline of midnight for an agreement with student organizers, which must include dismantling the encampment, dispersing, and following university policies going forward. If discussions are unsuccessful, administrators will have to consider alternative options to clear the West Lawn and restore calm to campus.

As the midnight deadline approached, a student demonstrator announced an extension of the negotiation deadline to 8 a.m., but later, a campus spokesperson stated that university officials and protest organizers were hashing out four main agreements with a 48-hour window for negotiations.

Demonstrators have made it clear that they will not continue negotiations without a written commitment from the administration that the NYPD or National Guard will not be used on students. Despite New York Gov. Kathy Hochul stating she has no plans to call in the National Guard, the NYPD had its riot police and counterterrorism unit standing by overnight.

The deadline for an agreement comes after the university authorized police to sweep the encampment, resulting in over 100 arrests. Shafik emphasized that while the right to protest is essential and protected at Columbia, harassment and discrimination will not be tolerated.

The situation at Columbia University is fluid, with negotiations ongoing and tensions running high. The outcome of these discussions will have a significant impact on the future of the encampment and the overall atmosphere on campus. Stay tuned for updates as the story unfolds.
