“He has a right to defend Israel, a right to continue to pursue Hamas, but he must, he must, he must pay more attention to the innocent lives being lost as a consequence of the actions taken,” President Biden stated in the interview. He went on to say that he believes Mr. Netanyahu’s military strategy is hurting Israel more than helping it, and called for a cease-fire to prevent further loss of life.
The President’s comments come at a critical time as the Gaza Strip faces a humanitarian crisis, with the Gazan health ministry reporting over 31,000 people killed since the conflict began. President Biden has been vocal about the need to protect civilians in Gaza, urging Mr. Netanyahu not to proceed with plans for a major ground offensive without a plan to safeguard those sheltering in the area.
In response to the crisis, the United States has been providing humanitarian aid to Gaza, with U.S. military cargo planes dropping food, water, and other supplies into the enclave. President Biden is also working on a plan to build a floating pier off the coast of Gaza to deliver more aid to those in need. However, challenges remain as Israel has largely blocked the delivery of supplies by land.
Despite the difficulties, President Biden remains hopeful that a cease-fire can be brokered between Israel and Hamas, especially with the holy month of Ramadan approaching.
