Review: Teeth – A Gory Musical Affair to Dismember

The Off-Broadway musical “Teeth” is causing quite a stir with its provocative take on sex, shame, and revenge. The story follows Dawn, a young woman whose terror is not rooted in familial or theocratic issues, but in her own erotic desires. As she navigates relationships with her boyfriend and gay best friend, Dawn’s journey takes a dark turn when she discovers she has a deadly secret.

The musical, based on the cult film of the same name, takes the audience on a wild ride as Dawn and her friends become entangled in a bloody battle against misogyny and vengeance. The once light and amusing songs transform into dark and grating anthems, while the dances become intense and haunting.

Despite the talented cast and creative team behind the production, including director Benson and playwright Jacobs, some critics feel that “Teeth” may have bitten off more than it can chew. The transition from campy satire to gruesome horror feels forced, and the characters’ motivations seem driven more by the agenda of the story rather than genuine emotions.

Nevertheless, “Teeth” offers a unique and thought-provoking exploration of sexuality and power dynamics. The show is running at Playwrights Horizons in Manhattan until April 14, with a running time of 1 hour and 55 minutes. Whether you’re a fan of the original film or looking for a bold and daring theatrical experience, “Teeth” is sure to leave a lasting impression.
