Strictly Come Dancing star Wynne Evans has found himself at the center of controversy after a “stupid joke that went wrong” on Saturday’s show. The opera singer expressed feeling “heartbroken” over the fallout from the incident, which involved some apparently awkward moments with his dance partner Katya Jones.
Viewers noticed tension between Evans and Jones during the performance, with Jones seemingly declining a high-five and later moving his hand from her waist. However, Jones took to social media to explain that they were simply “messing around” and it was all part of an “inside joke.”
Speaking on BBC Radio Wales, Evans addressed the situation, stating, “I’m absolutely heartbroken by the things that have been written about me in the last day.” He clarified that he and Jones are close friends and the incident was a misinterpreted joke that they thought was funny.
Despite the backlash, Evans remains enthusiastic about the show and expressed his desire for the incident not to overshadow his experience on Strictly Come Dancing. He and Jones received positive feedback for their tango performance to Abba’s Money, Money, Money, coming joint second on the leaderboard.
The BBC declined to comment on the matter, but a Strictly source confirmed that the show’s welfare team had checked in on the pair and no further actions were planned. Evans concluded by saying, “I’m absolutely still up for it. I’m having the best time of my life. I just don’t want this to be the bit that people remember.”
