Female Soldiers in Ukraine Defy Gender Norms to Fight on the Front Lines
In the midst of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, a new wave of female soldiers has emerged, challenging traditional gender roles and stereotypes in the military. One such soldier is a 32-year-old commander known by the call sign Witch, who leads a Ukrainian artillery platoon just outside Bakhmut. A former lawyer, Witch joined the military with her family the day after Russia invaded in 2022. Despite limited formal training, she has taken on the responsibility of supervising artillery systems and has been on the front lines since early 2023.
Witch is just one of the 65,000 women currently serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, a 30 percent increase since the war began. They operate under the same harsh conditions as their male counterparts, facing the constant threat of Russian assaults and enduring the hardships of war.

Organizations like Veteranka and Zemliachky have stepped in to help bridge the gap and support these women in their service.
Moreover, female soldiers have faced discrimination and harassment from senior commanders, who have been slow to accept women in combat roles. Despite these obstacles, women like Witch and her fellow soldiers continue to defy expectations and prove their capabilities on the battlefield.
