Kenya’s President William Ruto Faces Criticism Over Private Jet Use

Kenya’s President William Ruto has sparked controversy and faced widespread criticism after revealing that he used a private jet to fly to the US last week because it was cheaper than using the national airline, Kenya Airways.

Despite not disclosing the actual cost of the private jet or the comparison with Kenya Airways, President Ruto’s remarks have drawn sharp rebuke from political analysts and opposition figures. Political analyst Prof Herman Manyora questioned the validity of the president’s statement, while senior opposition figure Eugene Wamalwa labeled the comments as “unpatriotic.”

President Ruto’s three-day official state visit to the US resulted in securing investment deals worth billions of dollars and the country being designated as a major non-Nato ally by the US. However, the use of a luxury jet for the trip has continued to stir controversy, prompting the president to defend his decision upon his return to Kenya.

In a statement on social media, President Ruto defended his choice, stating that the cost of the private jet was less than traveling on Kenya Airways. Despite his explanation, many Kenyans remain critical of the president’s decision.

Critics argue that the president should have provided a more detailed explanation to justify the use of a private jet, emphasizing the benefits of flexibility, class, and security. Some have also raised concerns about the president opting for an airline owned by another country instead of supporting Kenya Airways.

Calculations by local media suggest that the total cost of business class tickets for the president and his delegation would have been significantly cheaper than hiring a private jet. Reports indicate that the cost of hiring the jet was $1.5 million, compared to an estimated $300,000 for business-class tickets on Kenya Airways for the entire delegation.

Despite the backlash, President Ruto dismissed the reported costs as “completely exaggerated” in an interview with Voice Of America (VOA), emphasizing his careful consideration of resources. Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura also defended the visit, highlighting the benefits outweighing the costs.

The controversy surrounding President Ruto’s use of a private jet comes amid concerns about government extravagance and the use of taxpayers’ money for official trips. President Ruto has made over 50 foreign visits since taking office in 2022, with the government defending the necessity of these trips while implementing directives to cut spending.
