The Dangers of Whistleblowing on the Blockchain: Why Bitcoin is Not the Answer
Whistleblowing has always been a risky endeavor, but with the rise of blockchain technology, the stakes have been raised even higher. While Bitcoin allows for the permanent inscribing of data onto the public record, leaking information on the blockchain remains a terrible idea.
In a world where leaking sensitive information can lead to serious consequences, the allure of using the Bitcoin blockchain as a platform for whistleblowing may seem tempting. After all, once information is inscribed on the blockchain, it cannot be deleted. It is there forever, for anyone in the world to see. But the reality is far more complicated.
Protecting whistleblowers is of utmost importance, and simply publishing data directly to the Bitcoin blockchain is not a foolproof solution. By doing so, important data points that could identify the source may be missed, and readers may be unable to verify the chain of custody, potentially discrediting the leak.
Moreover, many large corporations employ sophisticated methods to identify the sources of leaks, such as watermarking and digital fingerprints. Watermarking alters data to make it uniquely identifiable, while digital fingerprints are derived from inherent information in digital communication. These methods can easily identify the source of a leak, making it difficult for whistleblowers to remain anonymous.
Establishing a chain of custody is crucial to protect the credibility of leaked information. Without proper documentation of how a document has been handled, journalists may find it hard to verify the authenticity of a leak, leading to potential discreditation.
Contrary to popular belief, Bitcoin is not a privacy technology. Even if precautions are taken to avoid fingerprinting and follow chain-of-custody procedures, publishing information on the public blockchain can still lead to the identification of the leaker.
In conclusion, while whistleblowing is important in exposing abuses of power, using Bitcoin as a platform for leaking information is not a safe option. The risks of being identified and discredited far outweigh the benefits of using the blockchain for whistleblowing. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to leaking sensitive information.
