Meta’s Latest Update Turns Ray-Ban Glasses into Sci-Fi Gadget
In a move that showcases the ever-evolving tech industry, Meta is set to release a major update that will transform the Ray-Ban Meta camera glasses into a device straight out of a sci-fi movie. The update will introduce new artificial intelligence software that allows the glasses to see the real world and describe what the wearer is looking at, similar to the A.I. assistant in the movie “Her.”
Previously used primarily for taking photos and videos and listening to music, the glasses will now have the capability to scan famous landmarks, translate languages, identify animal breeds, and even exotic fruits. By simply saying “Hey, Meta” followed by a prompt, wearers can interact with the A.I. assistant, receiving responses through the glasses’ tiny speakers.
Tech columnists Brian X. Chen and Mike Isaac were given early access to the update and put the technology to the test in various settings, including the zoo, grocery stores, and museums. While the A.I. assistant had its share of goof-ups, such as mistaking a monkey for a giraffe, it also impressed with useful tasks like identifying gluten-free cookies.
The glasses also proved handy in the kitchen, with the A.I. assistant offering assistance with measurements and ingredients. However, there were still some kinks to work out, such as the A.I. providing rapid-fire instructions for a recipe without allowing for a more user-friendly experience.
Despite its limitations, Meta’s A.I.-powered glasses offer a glimpse into a future that once seemed distant. While there are challenges in designing such products, the glasses showcase the advancements in technology, with the ability to translate languages and identify landmarks through a stylish pair of glasses. As the tech continues to improve, the possibilities for these glasses are endless.
