Vice President Kamala Harris Emerges as Strong Contender in Hypothetical Matchup Against Trump
Recent polls have shown that Vice President Kamala Harris is gaining ground in a potential 2024 showdown against former President Donald Trump. Before President Biden announced he would discontinue his re-election campaign and endorsed Harris, polls indicated that Harris was only trailing Trump by a slim margin.
According to a New York Times/Siena College poll conducted in Pennsylvania, Harris was only one percentage point behind Trump in a hypothetical matchup. In Virginia, Harris had a five percentage point lead over Trump, outperforming Biden in both states among key demographics such as Black voters, younger voters, and women.
A Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll revealed that 70% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents would be “satisfied” if Biden withdrew from the race and Harris was nominated as the 2024 Democratic presidential candidate. Additionally, a CNN poll showed that three-quarters of voters believe the Democratic Party would have a better chance of keeping the White House with someone other than Biden at the top of the ticket.
As pressure mounted for Biden to step aside, a poll from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that about six in 10 Democrats believe Harris would do a good job as president. With Harris gaining momentum in the polls, the 2024 election is shaping up to be a competitive race.
Former President Trump held his first public campaign rally with his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as the political landscape continues to evolve. Stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming election.
