Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s Progressive Transgender Policies Energize Democrat Ticket
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who has been selected as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, is bringing a track record of progressive transgender policies to the Democrat ticket that is sure to energize the country’s left-wing base.
Walz, a former Army National Guardsman and teacher, made headlines as one of the first governors to sign into law a bill making Minnesota a “sanctuary state” for children seeking transgender surgical procedures and hormone prescriptions. This move laid the groundwork for several more progressive LGBTQ policies in the state.
The sanctuary law in Minnesota tells courts not to follow prosecutions from other states against individuals seeking treatments like puberty blockers, hormone therapy, or surgery in Minnesota. This has made the state a key destination for individuals seeking gender-affirming treatments, especially as neighboring states have imposed restrictions on such procedures.
In addition to the sanctuary law, Walz also signed a bill preventing the removal of books with LGBTQ+ content from public schools, as well as a law banning “conversion therapy” and requiring free menstrual products in all public school bathrooms.
With his progressive stance on LGBTQ rights and other social issues, Walz has drawn both praise and criticism. Former President Trump’s campaign and supporters have taken to calling him “Tampon Tim” following his selection as Harris’ running mate.
Harris and Walz are now hitting the campaign trail together, traveling across battleground states to court voters and attack their opponents. Walz’s progressive policies are sure to be a key talking point as the election season heats up.
