Three People Stabbed at Notting Hill Carnival in London, One in Critical Condition
The opening day of the Notting Hill Carnival in London took a violent turn on Sunday as at least three people were stabbed, with one still in life-threatening condition, according to the city’s police.
The London Metropolitan Police Service reported that a 32-year-old woman was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, while a 29-year-old man and a 24-year-old man were also stabbed. The 29-year-old man was listed in non-life-threatening condition, while the condition of the 24-year-old was still pending at the time of the report.
In addition to the stabbings, 15 police officers were assaulted during the event, though none sustained serious injuries. Police made a total of 90 arrests for various offenses, including assaulting emergency workers, possession of offensive weapons, sexual offenses, theft, robbery, assault, public order offenses, drug possession, and possession of nitrous oxide.
The Notting Hill Carnival, which celebrates Caribbean music and culture, attracts hundreds of thousands of revelers each year. The event, which takes place over two days, has a history dating back to 1958 and has grown into one of the world’s biggest street parties.
Police had been authorized to order the removal of face coverings used to conceal identities at the carnival, with refusal to comply resulting in potential arrest.
The carnival returned to the streets of Notting Hill in 2022 after being held online for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.
