Vietnam’s Political Turmoil Deepens as Head of Parliament Resigns Amid Anticorruption Campaign

Vietnam’s political landscape was rocked on Friday as Vuong Dinh Hue, the chairman of Vietnam’s National Assembly, resigned from his position following allegations of violating regulations governing Communist Party members. This resignation comes amidst a widening anticorruption campaign that has already seen several high-level government officials depart from their positions.

The Central Inspection Committee found that Mr. Hue’s actions had caused “bad public opinion” and affected the reputation of the Party, the state, and himself personally. This resignation marks the fifth Politburo member to step down or be fired since 2021, highlighting the ongoing power struggle within the Vietnamese government.

Mr. Hue, who was considered one of the “four pillars” of leadership in Vietnam, was seen as a potential candidate for future leadership of the party. His departure is likely to add to the anxiety among officials in Vietnam as they prepare for a leadership transition in 2026.

The question now arises as to who will succeed Nguyen Phu Trong, the current leader of the Communist Party. Mr. Trong, who is 80 years old and reportedly in poor health, has been at the helm since 2016 and has spearheaded a major anticorruption campaign within the party.

Despite his popularity among his peers, Mr. Hue’s resignation has raised concerns among foreign investors who have flocked to Vietnam in recent years. The country’s stability and future leadership remain uncertain as the government continues to grapple with internal turmoil.

As Vietnam prepares to commemorate the 49th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War and the reunification of North and South Vietnam under communist rule, the resignation of Mr. Hue serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the country’s political landscape.
