Radio 1’s Live Lounge Celebrates 25 Years with Top Performances

In the world of music, there are certain performances that stand out above the rest. And now, to celebrate 25 years of Radio 1’s Live Lounge, the station’s presenters have voted for the best-ever performances on the show.

Topping the list is Amy Winehouse and her unforgettable 2007 cover of The Zutons’ Valerie. This iconic performance beat out stars such as Arctic Monkeys, Adele, RAYE, and Dua Lipa. Arctic Monkeys also secured second and third place with their covers of Girls Aloud’s Love Machine and Drake’s Hold On We’re Going Home.

Adele’s cover of Cheryl’s Promise This came in fourth place, while Ben Howard’s rendition of Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen rounded out the top five.

The Live Lounge format sees artists performing a song of their own and a cover from another artist in a live, acoustic setting. To celebrate 25 years, Radio 1 presenters ranked their top 25 performances from a longlist of 50 based on performance quality, cultural impact, audience success, and longevity.

Amy Winehouse’s cover of Valerie gained so much attention that it was officially released on Mark Ronson’s album Version, where famous names covered other artists’ songs. The track peaked at number two on the Official Singles Chart.

Current hosts of the Live Lounge, Rickie, Melvin, and Charlie, praised the past 25 years of iconic and unforgettable covers, with Amy Winehouse’s performance standing out as a worthy winner.

Live Lounge tracks from artists like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, Jay Z, and Miley Cyrus have garnered millions of views on YouTube, showcasing the impact of the show on the music industry.

Overall, the Live Lounge has provided a platform for artists to pay tribute to those who have inspired them, creating memorable and special moments for both performers and audiences alike.
