The USS New Jersey, a historic battleship with a storied past, is set to make a historic homecoming as it leaves its mooring in Camden, New Jersey for the first time since arriving in 2000. Ken Kersch, a former machinist on the ship during the Vietnam War, will be aboard for the journey down the Delaware River to Philadelphia Navy Yard for drydock maintenance.

Kersch, who served on the USS New Jersey from 1967 to 1969, speaks about the ship with deep affection, calling it the best ship he served on and a part of his life. He will have the honor of firing the guns of the battleship as it departs and returns to Camden, in what is sure to be a memorable experience.

The USS New Jersey has a rich history, having supported land operations during the Vietnam War and participating in various conflicts throughout its active service. It is the most decorated ship in history, the longest battleship, and the fastest battleship in history.

As the battleship embarks on this journey, visitors will have the rare opportunity to walk under the suspended ship in Philadelphia drydock. The Homeport Alliance, the nonprofit that operates the ship, is excited for this historic moment and looks forward to welcoming the USS New Jersey back to Camden in two months.

For Kersch and others who served on the USS New Jersey, this homecoming is a chance to reconnect with a piece of their past and honor the legacy of this legendary battleship.
