Team USA women’s rugby sevens squad makes history with bronze medal victory at Paris Olympics
The Team USA women’s rugby sevens squad made history on Tuesday by securing an incredible bronze medal victory over Australia at the Paris Olympics. The Americans won the match 14-12, marking the first rugby sevens medal for Team USA – men’s or women’s.
The highlight of the match came when Spiff Sedrick ran the length of the field to help secure the win, bouncing two would-be tacklers and scoring a crucial try. Sedrick also nailed the conversion, sealing the victory for Team USA.
Ilona Maher, #2 of Team United States, who has become a social media sensation during the Paris Olympics, celebrated the win by posting a selfie with her medal, captioning it with one word: “Delicious.”
Maher reflected on the team’s journey to the bronze medal, including a tough quarterfinals loss to Great Britain. She emphasized the importance of staying mentally sharp and focused on the task at hand, both on and off the field.
“I wanted to be good at social media but also be a very good rugby player,” Maher said. “It was important for me to show that you can be anything. You can be beast, beauty, brains.”
With this historic victory, Maher and her teammates can now call themselves Olympic medalists. Congratulations to Team USA on their incredible achievement at the Paris Olympics.
