A groundbreaking new guaranteed income pilot project is set to launch in Massachusetts, offering hope and financial stability to 200 families on the brink of losing their homes. The Somerville Guaranteed Basic Income Program, funded by President Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act, will provide $750 per month for one year starting in July.
This innovative program aims to support housing stability by offering unrestricted cash payments directly to vulnerable residents in need. The city of Somerville will proactively reach out to families with a history of housing instability to participate in the program, which will be evaluated for its impact and future feasibility in partnership with the UMass Center for Social Policy and the Collins Center.
With at least 24 states across the US launching similar programs and over $200 million allocated to explore the benefits of direct cash payments, the Somerville pilot project is part of a larger movement to help those in need.
