Armed Robberies Target UPS and Amazon Trucks in Washington, D.C.
In a shocking series of events, UPS and Amazon trucks were targeted in two armed robberies just 30 minutes apart in southeast Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, according to police reports.
The Metropolitan Police Department reported that a UPS truck driver was the victim of an armed robbery in the 1000 block of Cook Drive Southeast in the morning. Shortly after, an Amazon truck driver was also targeted in the 800 block of Cook Drive Southeast.
President and CEO of Metropolitan Protective Services, Derrick Parks, commented on the concerning trend of armed vehicle robberies in the area, stating, “This is a very unique time that we’re in.” Parks highlighted the increase in various types of robberies, including strong-arm, carjackings, and theft from auto, with delivery drivers being specifically targeted.
This is not the first time delivery truck drivers have fallen victim to robberies in the district. In November, an Amazon delivery driver was carjacked, and in February, surveillance images were released after alcohol was stolen from a delivery truck.
Parks emphasized the importance of addressing the elements that lead to crime, stating, “Crime only occurs when you have three elements — motive, means, and opportunity. We have to figure out a way to eliminate one if not all of those elements.”
The incidents serve as a reminder of the risks faced by delivery drivers and the need for increased security measures to protect them while on the job.
