The UK ambassador to Mexico has reportedly left his post earlier this year after a shocking incident where he pointed a gun at a local member of embassy staff. A video posted on social media shows Jon Benjamin aiming a rifle at another man, sparking outrage and concern.
The video, originally reported by the Financial Times, was captioned: “In [the] context of daily killings in Mexico by drug dealers, he dares to joke.” Mr Benjamin has not commented on the incident, which appears to have been a badly misplaced joke.
While no official announcement has been made by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Mr Benjamin is no longer listed as ambassador to Mexico on the government’s official website. The video shows a man resembling Mr Benjamin moving a weapon around a car, aiming it at different people while laughter can be heard in the background.
Mr Benjamin, known for his unconventional approach as a diplomat, arrived in Mexico with a reputation for being outspoken and engaging on social media. He was a firm believer in the soft power of British rock and indie music, often hosting major UK bands and artists in his residence.
The incident took place during a trip to drug-cartel controlled states in Mexico, where over 30,000 people were murdered last year. The country has strict gun laws, making the ambassador’s actions even more concerning.
The FCDO has stated that they are aware of the incident and have taken appropriate action. The BBC has reached out to Mr Benjamin for comment, but he has not responded. This incident has brought an ignominious end to what was otherwise a distinguished career in the FCDO.
