University of Florida President Ben Sasse Takes Stand Against Anti-Israel Protests on College Campuses

University of Florida President Ben Sasse has spoken out against the ongoing anti-Israel protests that have been erupting across college campuses nationwide. Thousands have been arrested this graduation season due to these protests, with some even leading to the cancellation of commencement ceremonies.

In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Sasse emphasized the importance of upholding time, place, and manner restrictions, stating, “You don’t get to take over the whole university. People don’t get to spit at cops. You don’t get to barricade yourselves in buildings. You don’t get to disrupt somebody else’s commencement.”

Sasse reiterated his commitment to free speech and protecting Jewish students, stating, “We will always defend your right to free speech and free assembly.” He emphasized that while protesters have the right to express their views, they must do so within the boundaries of the university’s rules.

Recent arrests have been made at various college campuses in Florida, with nine individuals being arrested at the University of Florida alone. Sasse made it clear that while the university supports the right to protest, camping on campus is not allowed, and rules must be followed.

When asked if he would consider the protesters’ requests, Sasse stated that the university does not negotiate with those who “scream the loudest.” He emphasized the importance of drawing the line between speech and action and not giving undue attention to the most vocal minority.

Sasse’s stance on the anti-Israel protests aligns with the sentiments expressed by the university’s Associate Vice President Of Communications, Steve Orlando. Orlando emphasized that the university does not treat protesters like children and that those who break the rules will face consequences.

In response to inquiries, the University of Florida directed attention to a ‘Wall Street Journal’ op-ed written by Sasse, in which he criticized the entitlement and lack of understanding displayed by some activists participating in the protests.

Overall, Sasse’s firm stance against the anti-Israel protests reflects the university’s commitment to upholding free speech while maintaining order and respect for the rules on campus.
