Two people have been killed and 10 others injured in a horrifying knife attack at a primary school in China’s southern Jiangxi province, police confirmed. The attack, carried out by a 45-year-old woman using a fruit knife, took place at about midday in Guixi city.
The motive behind the attack is still unclear, and it is not immediately known if children were among the casualties. The woman has been apprehended by the police and is now under control.
Parents of the students at the school have expressed shock and fear upon hearing about the incident. One parent, speaking anonymously to the BBC, shared their distress, saying, “My child is in the fifth grade and very young and has safely arrived home, but the school has not informed us of anything and has kept everything hidden. I am going back to comfort my child and to find out what exactly happened.”
Another parent echoed the sentiment of fear, stating, “Of course, we are scared. It’s not just the children; even we adults are very frightened.” However, they praised the quick response of the class teachers in ensuring the safety of the children and communicating with parents.
This tragic incident adds to a series of knife attacks that China has witnessed in recent months. The country has been grappling with such violent incidents, including a stabbing at a hospital in Yunnan province in May, an attack in a residential district in Yunnan in August last year, and a stabbing at a kindergarten in Guangdong province in July of the same year.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the primary school attack to determine the circumstances and prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
