ABC News has announced that it will host the first debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic vice-presidential nominee Kamala Harris on September 10. The network confirmed the showdown in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, following Trump’s statement that he would be open to debating Harris multiple times before the November election.
Trump expressed his desire for three debates, suggesting that Fox News and NBC host the additional debates. Harris confirmed her attendance at the ABC debate during an event in Michigan, stating that she is looking forward to debating Trump on September 10.
The confirmation of the debate on ABC comes after a series of back-and-forth exchanges between the two campaigns following Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race. Trump and Biden were initially scheduled to debate on September 10, but Biden’s exit led to the rearrangement of the debate schedule.
In addition to the ABC debate, Trump proposed two additional debates with Harris on Fox News and NBC. CBS is set to host a debate between the vice-presidential nominees, Republican JD Vance and Democratic Tim Walz. NBC News is reportedly in discussions with both campaigns for a potential debate this autumn.
During a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Trump criticized Harris for not holding a news conference or doing an interview since becoming the likely Democratic nominee. In response, the Harris campaign stated that Trump should focus on campaigning rather than attacking Harris.
As the election draws closer, both campaigns are ramping up their efforts to secure votes. National and battleground state polls indicate a close race, with Harris gaining ground in recent days. Trump denied that he had shifted his focus from Biden to Harris and emphasized his priorities of lowering inflation, reducing crime rates, and strengthening the military.
The upcoming debate between Trump and Harris is expected to be a highly anticipated event, providing voters with an opportunity to hear directly from the candidates on key issues facing the country. Stay tuned for more updates on this historic debate.
