The annual Salone del Mobile furniture fair in Milan has always been a major event in the design world, but this year’s edition seemed to buzz with a new level of excitement. More people from outside the industry joined the throngs, forming hourlong lines outside events like the launch of Hermès’s interiors collection and the annual installation by Dimorestudio.
One of the standout presentations was Formafantasma’s Floral Chairs and Futuristic Lights, which combined steel armatures with colorful wood and hand-painted floral motifs. Another highlight was the new furniture line from Dimorestudio, featuring bold minimalist forms paired with luxe materials.
Gucci also made a splash with their blood-red design icons, partnering with Italian design companies to reimagine classic pieces in their new signature color. The Alcova satellite fair took over the former home of Modernist architect Osvaldo Borsani, showcasing pieces from up-and-coming designers.
Loewe commissioned 24 artists and designers to create unique lamps, while Rooms Studio from Georgia exhibited eye-catching beds in a range of materials. Dolce & Gabbana’s Gen D project paired international designers with Italian craft workshops, resulting in interesting stylistic mash-ups.
Close-up photographs of Modernist interiors and a circular Ping-Pong table made from acrylic-resin were also highlights of the fair. Overall, this year’s Salone del Mobile was a showcase of creativity and innovation in the design world.
