Three additional suspects have been arrested in connection with a shootout that injured 11 people in a public square in Savannah’s downtown historic district. The incident, which took place on May 18, involved multiple shooters opening fire in Ellis Square, a popular nightlife district among tourists.
According to Savannah Police Chief Lenny Gunther, the shootout stemmed from a late-night argument between two women. While no one was killed in the incident, 10 people were struck by gunfire and another individual was injured by glass from a shattered car window. All the victims were treated at a hospital and later released.
The three new suspects, identified as Samira Kenny, 29, Jordan Caleb Jones, 20, and Cazare Cooper, 19, have been charged with aggravated assault and possessing a weapon while committing a crime. Cooper also faces additional gun possession charges in a separate felony case.
These arrests come after 20-year-old William Anthony Mitchell was apprehended last week and charged with four counts of aggravated assault in connection with the Ellis Square shootings. Mitchell was already facing felony charges in an unrelated case involving possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute.
The violence in Ellis Square marks the worst mass shooting in Savannah since June 2021, when one person was killed and seven others were wounded in a similar incident. The recent arrests highlight law enforcement’s efforts to address and prevent such acts of violence in the city.
