Kevin Costner’s latest film, Horizon: An American Saga, has hit cinemas with a bang, captivating audiences with its epic storytelling and stunning visuals. But behind the scenes, there is a lesser-known story of collaboration and creativity that involves the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO).
Costner, who has been working on this four-film vision for almost 40 years, approached the RSNO last year to record the soundtrack for Horizon. Composer John Debney, known for his work on films like Elf and The Passion of the Christ, had previously worked with the RSNO and recommended them for the project.
The RSNO, based in Glasgow, welcomed Costner and Debney to their purpose-built center last August for a five-day recording session. Costner, known for his passion for Westerns, was actively involved in the process, choosing to sit with the musicians in the recording studio rather than in the control room.
The collaboration was a success, with the RSNO’s performance adding depth and emotion to the film’s narrative. Costner was so impressed with the orchestra’s work that he expressed his desire to work with them again on the next installment of the saga.
For the RSNO, this project was not only a creative opportunity but also a valuable revenue stream in challenging times for public funding. The orchestra’s work on film soundtracks allows them to reach a wider audience and showcase their talent on a global scale.
As Costner plans the third film in the series, the RSNO remains hopeful for future collaborations, eager to continue their partnership with the Hollywood legend and bring their music to audiences around the world.
