The Young V&A, dubbed the most joyful museum in the world, has clinched the prestigious 2024 Museum of the Year award, cementing its status as a beacon of creativity and innovation in the museum world.

Located in east London, the Young V&A is a vibrant space designed specifically for children and young people, offering a unique and interactive museum experience. After undergoing a £13 million redevelopment and reopening in July 2023, the museum has quickly captured the hearts of visitors and critics alike.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy praised the Young V&A for creating a “unique space dedicated to young people,” while Jenny Waldman, director of the Art Fund and chair of the judges, hailed the museum as “truly inspirational.” Waldman commended the museum for its focus on learning through play and its dynamic approach to engaging with young visitors.

Featuring three new galleries titled Play, Imagine, and Design, the Young V&A showcases over 2,000 objects spanning centuries of history. From an open design studio to a games design space for teenagers, the museum offers a range of interactive experiences that encourage creativity and exploration.

One of the highlights of the museum is its current exhibition, “Japan: Myths to Manga,” which delves into Japanese history and its influence on popular culture, technology, and design. The exhibition has even attracted the attention of the Emperor of Japan.

Since its reopening, the Young V&A has welcomed over 590,000 visitors, a testament to its popularity and impact on the community. The museum’s success was recognized by the Art Fund charity, which awarded it the Museum of the Year title along with a £120,000 prize.

The Young V&A was up against tough competition, including Craven Museum in Skipton, Dundee Contemporary Arts, Manchester Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery in London. While these finalists will each receive £15,000, the spotlight remains on the Young V&A for its commitment to community engagement, sustainability, and reinvention in the museum sector.

With its innovative approach to engaging young audiences and its dedication to creating a joyful and inspiring museum experience, the Young V&A is set to inspire generations to come with its dynamic and empowering exhibits.
