Metropolitan Opera premieres vibrant production of “El Nino” retelling the Nativity story through modern lens
NEW YORK (AP) — The Metropolitan Opera is set to premiere a vibrant production of “El Nino,” a retelling of the birth and early life of Jesus through a mix of biblical verses and modern Latin American poetry, medieval texts, and apocrypha. Set to music by John Adams, the opera is a unique blend of traditional and contemporary elements.
The production, nearly a quarter-century after its first performance in Paris in 2000, features a multi-colored stage with puppets, projections, dancers, an onstage chorus, and even a flying boat to tell the Nativity story through the eyes of Mary. Director Lileana Blain-Cruz has framed the production as a story of migration and hope, drawing parallels to contemporary issues.
“This piece has kind of been haunting my consciousness for a while,” Blain-Cruz said. “The music is so crazy and complicated, but I find it so life-affirming at the same time. There’s an optimism in it.”
The opera features a diverse cast, including soprano Julia Bullock and mezzo J’Nai Bridges in the role of Mary. The set design reflects the journey from lush landscapes to more barren lands, symbolizing the themes of the story.
Despite the fantastical elements, the production also touches on darker themes, including the massacre of student protesters in 1968, adding a contemporary twist to the timeless story. Conductor Marin Alsop praised the cast and choir for their ability to navigate the complex score, which includes a mix of driving rhythms and contemplative sections.
“El Nino” marks the fourth Adams work performed by the Met, showcasing the composer’s unique style and innovative approach to opera. The production promises to be a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience for audiences.
The opera opens on April 23 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, marking the debuts of Blain-Cruz, Bullock, Bridges, and Alsop at the prestigious venue.
