After almost a decade of anticipation, fans of the Civilization video game series can finally rejoice as Firaxis has announced the upcoming release of Civilization VII in February. The new installment promises to be a graphical step-up from previous years, with a focus on the evolution of London from the Roman era to modern times.

Lead developer Ed Beach revealed that the inspiration behind Civilization VII came from a map of Londinium, the Roman name for London. The game will allow players to experience the changes and growth of the city over different eras, starting with the Romans and progressing through the Normans to the modern era.

The developers drew inspiration from historical maps and sites in London, such as Ludgate, to create a game that reflects the layers of history and development in the city. The new game will offer players the opportunity to build and shape their own version of London, with each era bringing new challenges and opportunities.

In addition to the graphical overhaul, Civilization VII will introduce new gameplay mechanics and features, including more intelligent computer-controlled civilizations, unique civics for each civilization, and the inclusion of important historical figures as playable leaders. The game’s narrator, Gwendoline Christie, adds a layer of gravitas to the visual upgrade.

While some changes may be concerning to hardcore fans, such as the automatic building of roads by traders, the overall response to the new features and improvements has been positive. With promises of improved AI and a more dynamic gameplay experience, Civilization VII is shaping up to be a must-play for fans of the series.

As the release date approaches, fans can look forward to exploring the rich history and evolution of London in Civilization VII, and experiencing the thrill of building their own empire through the ages.
