Women in Kerala are taking a stand against gender violence in the Malayalam-language film industry, as a landmark report exposes the deep-rooted issues faced by women in one of India’s most popular film hubs.

The 290-page report, compiled by a three-member panel headed by a former judge of the Kerala High Court, sheds light on the rampant sexual harassment and abysmal working conditions faced by women in the industry. The report reveals that the industry is dominated by a “mafia of powerful men” who exploit and mistreat women, leading to physical discomfort and sickness due to lack of basic facilities like toilets and changing rooms.

The report, submitted to the government in December 2019 but only made public recently after legal challenges, highlights the urgent need for action to address the systemic issues plaguing the industry. The panel interviewed numerous industry professionals and gathered evidence, including video and audio clips, to support their findings.

The report has sparked outrage and demands for accountability from women’s rights activists, opposition leaders, and the public. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has pledged to take action against those accused of wrongdoing, emphasizing that no one is above the law.

The release of the report has been hailed as a victory by members of the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), who have been advocating for better working conditions and safety measures on film sets. The report’s recommendations aim to create a safer and more inclusive environment for women in the industry, ensuring that filmmaking becomes a viable career option for aspiring artists and technicians.

As the industry grapples with the revelations of the report, there is hope for change and progress towards a more equitable and safe working environment for all. The voices of women in Kerala are being heard, and their fight against gender violence is gaining momentum.
