State Senator Calls Out Governor for Failing to Acknowledge Uvalde School Shooting Anniversary
A Texas state senator, Roland Gutierrez, has criticized Republican Governor Greg Abbott for not publicly acknowledging the two-year anniversary of the tragic mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. The shooting, which took place on May 24, 2022, resulted in the deaths of 19 students and two teachers at the hands of an 18-year-old gunman.
Despite the significance of the anniversary, Governor Abbott did not mention the Uvalde shooting on his social media accounts or in any press releases from his office. This omission prompted Senator Gutierrez to speak out against the governor’s silence, calling him out on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
The delayed law enforcement response to the shooting has also come under scrutiny, with victims’ families filing a lawsuit against state law enforcement for failing to confront the shooter in a timely manner. A Justice Department report has indicated that lives could have been saved if the response had not been delayed, and a criminal investigation into the law enforcement’s actions is currently ongoing.
In the wake of the tragedy, Texas has implemented new safety measures, including laws requiring armed guards on every school campus. However, the failure to acknowledge the anniversary of the Uvalde shooting has reignited the debate over gun violence and school safety in the state.
As the community continues to mourn the loss of those who perished in the Uvalde shooting, Senator Gutierrez’s criticism of Governor Abbott serves as a reminder of the importance of remembering and honoring the victims of such senseless acts of violence.
