A Texas man was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to the gruesome murder of his newlywed wife, Anggy Diaz. Jared James Dicus, 23, was handed down the sentencing by Judge Gary Chaney after confessing to decapitating Diaz and leaving her head in the shower in 2023.
The Waller County District Attorney’s Office consulted with Diaz’s family before finalizing the plea deal and sentencing. Dicus waived his right to appeal the verdict and any potential defense, including an insanity defense, as part of the agreement.
“Waller County does not tolerate domestic violence. Heinous crimes like this one will not go unanswered,” said Waller County District Attorney Sean Whittmore. “We will seek justice for the victims of domestic violence and send a message to the perpetrators that here, we fight for our victims.”
Diaz, originally from Nicaragua, had been in the care of an aunt when she first arrived in the U.S. and had recently married Dicus at the Waller County Courthouse in October 2022. The tragic murder shocked the community, with evidence showing that a kitchen knife was used as the murder weapon.
After Diaz’s death, Dicus confessed to investigators, leading to his guilty plea and subsequent sentencing. The case raised concerns about Dicus’s mental health, but he was deemed competent to stand trial after a court-ordered examination.
The brutal nature of the crime and the heartbreaking loss of a young life have left a lasting impact on the community, emphasizing the importance of addressing domestic violence and seeking justice for victims.
