Korok Ray, Bitcoin researcher and Associate Professor at Texas A&M University, has announced the launch of The Bitcoin Research Institute, aimed at driving academic research at the intersection of Bitcoin and artificial intelligence.
During his presentation at the MicroStrategy World: Bitcoin for Corporations 2024 event, Ray highlighted Bitcoin’s potential to enable secure multi-party computation (MPC), using the example of poker players agreeing on the state of a game as a basic form of computation. He further discussed the integration of deep neural networks and agent-based reinforcement learning with the Bitcoin blockchain, envisioning artificially intelligent agents collectively performing computations.
Ray’s vision includes leveraging new developments in the Bitcoin ecosystem, such as BITVM, which allows off-chain Turing complete computation to be verified on Bitcoin. He proposed the concept of Bitcoin and AI combined as “The Undiscovered Country,” emphasizing the potential for deep integration between machines and the Bitcoin network in the future.
The Bitcoin Research Institute aims to connect research and development in Bitcoin and AI, bringing together top minds to explore innovative applications. Ray also highlighted potential research areas such as Chaumin mints for scaling bitcoin payments and secure prediction markets enabled by Bitcoin.
Ray’s speech underscored the importance of academic achievements in computer science that have led to the creation of Bitcoin and artificial intelligence, suggesting that further research in these areas will drive innovation across various sectors of the economy.
