A deadly drone attack in central Tel Aviv has left one man dead and several others injured, sparking fears of escalating violence in the region.
According to an Israeli military official, a block of flats was hit by a large, long-range drone, with the Houthi movement in Yemen claiming responsibility for the attack. This marks a significant escalation in their attacks on Israel, which began following Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
The Israeli military confirmed that they had detected the incoming drone but failed to shoot it down due to “human error.” The Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Saree, boasted that the strike was carried out with a new drone capable of bypassing interception systems.
In response to the attack, the Israeli military has increased air patrols, while Tel Aviv’s mayor has declared the city on high alert. Local residents described the terrifying moment when the blast shook the entire building, causing windows to shatter and buildings to be damaged.
This incident comes on the heels of the Israeli military confirming the killing of a senior Hezbollah commander in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in cross-border fire since the start of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, with both groups claiming to act in solidarity with the Palestinians.
As tensions continue to rise in the region, the people of Tel Aviv remain on edge, unsure of what further violence may come their way.
