An 18-year-old suspect has been arrested in Dnipro, Ukraine, in connection with the shooting death of former MP and linguistics professor Iryna Farion. The suspect was apprehended more than 900km away from the western city of Lviv where the attack occurred, following an extensive murder investigation.
Farion, known for her controversial statements about the Ukrainian language and patriotism, was shot outside her home in Lviv. The motive for the attack remains unclear, with President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioning the possibility of a Russian involvement.
The suspect, described as a skinny young man, was tracked down in Dnipro after investigators worked tirelessly to follow his trail. Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko praised the efforts of the investigative team, highlighting the meticulous work done to locate the suspect.
The suspect’s father stated that his son, a young footballer, had no anti-Ukrainian views and was a patriot who had aspirations of joining the army. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities looking into the possibility of others being involved in coordinating the attack.
Farion’s funeral in Lviv drew a large crowd, highlighting the impact she had in Ukrainian politics and society. The arrest of the suspect brings some closure to the tragic event, but questions still remain about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
