Elle Macpherson, the iconic supermodel and founder of beauty and wellness firm WelleCo, has revealed her battle with breast cancer in a chapter of her new book, titled Elle: Life, Lessons and How to Trust Yourself. The 60-year-old model shared that she is now in “clinical remission but I would say I’m in utter wellness.”

In the chapter titled Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, Macpherson disclosed that her doctor had recommended a mastectomy with radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and breast reconstruction. However, she decided to take a different approach and opted for what she described as “an intuitive, heart-led, holistic approach.”

The model spent several weeks deliberating over treatment options and sought advice from “32 doctors and experts.” Ultimately, she chose not to undergo chemotherapy and instead followed her own inner sense to find a solution that worked for her.

Macpherson shared that her treatment decision received mixed reactions from her family, with one of her sons supportive of her choice while the other was more conventional and not comfortable with her decision. Her former partner, Arki Busson, also thought avoiding a traditional treatment plan was “extreme” but remained supportive.

While Macpherson’s approach to her cancer treatment may be unconventional, it is important to note that research suggests alternative treatments are linked to reduced survival rates. Cancer charity Macmillan advises individuals considering alternative therapies to consult with their cancer doctor for advice and support.

In response to Macpherson’s breast cancer diagnosis, Jane Murphy, clinical nurse specialist at Breast Cancer Now, emphasized the importance of tailored treatment plans based on robust clinical evidence. Each person’s breast cancer diagnosis is unique, and treatment should be personalized to their individual situation in collaboration with a team of breast cancer experts.

Macpherson’s journey serves as a reminder of the importance of exploring all treatment options and making informed decisions that align with one’s beliefs and values.
