Greta Gerwig, the co-writer and director of the upcoming film ‘Barbie,’ recently shared some behind-the-scenes details about a musical sequence in the movie that is sure to delight audiences.
In an interview, Gerwig revealed that the sequence features a song sung by the character Ken, played by Ryan Gosling, as he arrives on a beach with other characters on pedalos. The scene is filled with whimsical elements, including waves that are sculptures and characters moving in pretend slow motion.
Gerwig explained that she wanted the fighting in the scene to be a mix of dancing and vaudevillian comedy, with men tangoing in the background. The Barbies in the scene are dressed in pink boilersuits as a tribute to Gerwig, who wore boilersuits every day on set.
The director also shared that the song performed by Ken was not originally in the script but was written by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt specifically for the scene. The dream ballet portion of the sequence was inspired by classic musicals like ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ and features all the characters as dancers.
Gerwig expressed her love for the “putting on a show” element of the film and the joy of creating something in a childlike way. She hopes that the audience will be inspired to go out and make something of their own after watching the movie.
With its blend of music, dance, and whimsy, the musical sequence in ‘Barbie’ promises to be a highlight of the film and a testament to Gerwig’s unique vision as a filmmaker.
