UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer Urges Iran to “Refrain” from Attacking Israel
In a recent phone call with Iran’s new president, Sir Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister, emphasized the importance of maintaining calm and avoiding any military escalation in the region. Downing Street revealed that during the 30-minute discussion with Masoud Pezeshkian, Sir Keir expressed concerns about the potential for miscalculation and urged Iran to refrain from attacking Israel.
This call marks the first communication between a UK prime minister and an Iranian president since March 2021. The timing of the conversation is crucial as tensions in the Middle East have been escalating following the recent assassinations of senior Hezbollah and Hamas leaders.
In a joint statement with the US, France, Italy, and Germany, the UK called on Iran to end its threats of a military attack on Israel. The leaders also reiterated their support for Israel’s defense against Iranian aggression and attacks by Iran-backed terrorist groups.
The US has responded to the growing concerns by sending a guided missile submarine to the region, capable of carrying Tomahawk cruise missiles. Additionally, the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, equipped with F-35C fighter jets, has been deployed to the area.
White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby echoed Israel’s concerns about a potential attack by Iran or its proxies in the coming days. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that the country is at “peak preparedness for attack and defense.”
Sir Keir Starmer emphasized the need for all parties to de-escalate and avoid further confrontation in the region. Iran has blamed Israel for the recent assassinations and has vowed to retaliate, while Israel has not officially commented on the incidents.
As tensions continue to rise, leaders around the world are urging caution and taking measures to ensure the safety of their citizens. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has advised Canadians to leave Lebanon due to the escalating tensions, leading airlines to cancel or suspend flights to the Middle East.
The situation remains volatile, with the risk of a wider conflict looming over the region. It is crucial for all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation.
