Disney’s Splash Mountain Replacement, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Set to Open Amid Controversy
In the summer of 2020, amidst a nationwide reckoning on racial justice, Disney announced its decision to remove Splash Mountain, a beloved flume ride with a racist backstory. The attraction, which featured animal minstrels from the controversial film “Song of the South,” had been a staple at Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida for decades.
While some applauded Disney’s move to replace Splash Mountain, others expressed disappointment and even outrage. Fans created a makeshift memorial near the ride’s entrance when it closed, and a petition calling for the decision to be reversed garnered over 100,000 signatures.
Now, Disney is unveiling Splash Mountain’s replacement, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, based on the 2009 animated film “The Princess and the Frog,” which introduced Disney’s first Black princess, Tiana. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure retains the ride tracks of Splash Mountain but features a completely redesigned storyline centered around a Mardi Gras party and Tiana’s quest to form a band with her friend Louis, an alligator. The ride also includes a new catchphrase, “Everybody’s welcome,” emphasizing inclusivity.
Despite initial backlash and criticism, early reviews of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure have been positive. Fans who have experienced the ride during its soft-opening phase have praised the immersive experience and the expansion of Tiana’s story.
