Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., made a passionate declaration during a Monday night speech, stating that it is the U.S.’s “biblical admonition” to support and help Israel. Addressing an emergency meeting of Christians United For Israel, convened in response to Iran’s recent missile attack on the Middle East American ally, Johnson emphasized the importance of unwavering strength and support for Israel.
“We have to make certain that the entire world understands that Israel is not alone and God is going to bless the nation that blesses Israel,” Johnson said. “This is something that’s an article of faith for us. It also happens to be great foreign policy.”
In his 15-minute address, Johnson also criticized President Biden and other top Democrats for their handling of the Israel conflict, particularly calling out Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for suggesting new elections in Israel.
“It’s breathtaking,” Johnson said of the Democrats’ actions. He also expressed confusion over the Biden administration’s foreign policy decisions, including extending sanctions waivers for Iran.
Following his speech, Johnson unveiled a new plan to fund Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan in a closed-door meeting with the House GOP conference. The proposal includes separate votes on each funding priority, likely to take place at the end of the week.
Overall, Johnson’s strong stance on supporting Israel and his criticism of the current administration’s foreign policy decisions have sparked debate and discussion among lawmakers and the public.
