Former City Councilman Darrell Day Wins GOP Primary Runoff in Texas’ 32nd Congressional District
In a tight primary fight, former Arlington City Councilman Darrell Day has emerged victorious in the GOP primary runoff for Texas’ 32nd Congressional District, the Associated Press reports. Day, a small business owner and founder of an executive search business, defeated former Southern Methodist University football player David Blewett in the closely watched race.
Now, Day is tasked with flipping one of Texas’ bluest House districts for Republicans in the upcoming November general election. He will face off against Democrat Julie Johnson, a member of the Texas House of Representatives, to replace Democrat Rep. Colin Allred, who is running for the U.S. Senate.
The district, which encompasses heavily urban areas north and east of downtown Dallas, presents a tough challenge for Republicans, as it was redrawn following the 2020 census to include more solidly Democrat-leaning areas. However, if Day emerges victorious in the race, it would mark a historic underdog win for the GOP.
Allred, who has represented the district since 2019, won re-election in 2022 with 65% of the vote following the redistricting. The top election analysts currently rate the race for Texas’ 32nd Congressional District as either “solid Democratic” or “safe Democratic.”
